Clinical
Fellowships
A Clinical Fellow
is a post-M.D. trainee who is pursuing further clinical or research
training in their own specialty and has successfully completed all
of the time and examination requirements which would allow them
to be listed (registered) as a specialist in their home country.
Specialist physicians
apply to train in Victoria as a Clinical Fellow. Once accepted,
Clinical Fellows train for typically a 12 to 24 months period in advanced
interventional cardiology techniques.
During their
training period, Clinical Fellows will also conduct original research
studies. Clinical Fellows first identify an area of patient care
that merits further study, then design and conduct an original research
project which will ultimately result in improvements to the care
of cardiovascular patients.
VHIF first began
sponsoring cardiovascular Clinical Fellows in 1999 and since that
time has trained Clinical Fellows from the following countries:
-

Canada

Victoria Harbour
Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program
The interventional fellowship program is linked to the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, British Columbia, under the supervision of Dr. Anthony Della Siega. There are two cardiac cathererization laboratories which provide interventional cardiology services for a population of nearly one million across Vancouver Island.
The Royal Jubilee Hospital was one of the first centres in the world to adopt a program wide trans-radial approach and has been performing trans-radial intervention for over 15 years. Currently, over 90% of cases are undertaken trans-radially including complex PCI, left main intervention, laser and rotational atherectomy. There is a full range of adjunctive diagnostic tools including intravascular ultrasound, pressure wire, and optical coherence tomography. At present, there are five interventionalists performing 1700 PCI procedures per year. The centre has also just started doing TAVI procedures.

NEW: due to College English language proficiency requirements, all applicable applicants must submit a positive TOEFL or IELST test score with their applications, in order for the application to be considered.
